LUCKYRICE presents an Asian food feast as only Houstonians could bring to life, with bites from Underbelly and Mala Sichuan Bistro, among others. Host Paul Qui comes back to welcome friends old and new, on behalf of a city which in the aftermath of an unprecedented hurricane, demonstrated an equally astonishing response of brotherhood and community.
Unlike the Asian American food communities of East and West Coast metropoles that are frequently depicted by mainstream media as driven by affluent East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Korean), Houston’s Asian culinary scenes boast an aesthetically and gastronomically much more brilliant heritage of South and Southeast Asian working class heroes, for whom cuisine is not just a luxury but a legacy. These are food cultures that celebrate sharing and adapting; spices and surprises. From some of the oldest kitchens of Asian America to newly defined concepts ushered by second and third generation chefs, LUCKYRICE Houston honors the community with a night of magic.
