Five years ago, Chef George Chen shared his vision of a Chinese Emporium with Danielle Chang, LUCKYRICE’s founder, who had every confidence that it would be nothing short of amazing. When Danielle and her team were scouting locations for an exclusive Breaking Bao dinner in San Francisco, CHINA LIVE was at the top of the list – and with good reason! During the month that tickets went on sale, Chef Chen’s Eight Tables was named one of Time Magazine’s “Top 100 World’s Greatest Places,” a well-deserved accolade that our guests were able to experience first-hand on Tuesday, September 18th.
Guests arrived at China Live through a private entrance, and were greeted with a choice of a specialty Kikori Whiskey Cocktail, a selection of Asahi Beer, and delicious wine from two local wine producers – Mo Family Vineyards and Kieu Hoang Winery. VIP guests were given an exclusive tour of Eight Tables along with an explanation of Chef Chen’s vision of recreating the ultimate dining experience in a private dynasty home. Guests were then invited into the kitchen with a specially-created Durian Milk cocktail in hand to get a sneak peek — and taste some mouth-watering nibbles — of the culinary magic that they were about to enjoy.
This was followed by a workshop of how to fold the perfect dumpling, which everyone loved (even if they hadn’t seen “Crazy Rich Asians” yet!). In the tradition of a Chinese banquet, guests were seated at shared tables in the Gold Mountain Lounge to experience the sumptuous Eight Tables menu with their “families” for the night. This one-of-a-kind, sold-out dining experience offered course after course of Chef Chen’s elevated Chinese cuisine. A highlight of the dinner was breaking bao with freshly steamed mantou (buns) served with a Red Cooked Pork Belly in Red Rice Lees (fermented rice), and generously topped with shaved Burgundy truffles.
Big XIEXIE to American Express, Kikori Whiskey, Asahi Beer, Mo Family Vineyards, Kieu Hoang Winery, and the China Live team for a wonderful night!
